Streaming 101
Learn the simple words and ideas you need before you buy gear or change encoder settings.
Streaming Has Five Main Parts
1. Camera
Makes the picture. It can be a phone, webcam, Mevo, mirrorless camera, camcorder, or PTZ camera.
2. Microphone
Makes the sound. Clear sound is often more important than buying a more expensive camera.
3. Encoder
Turns your picture and sound into a live stream. OBS, a hardware box, a camera, or Nova Studio can do this job.
4. Internet
Carries the stream from you to NovaNet.
5. NovaNet
Receives your stream and controls the final broadcast channel and output path.
Words You Will Hear
| Word | Simple meaning |
|---|---|
| Resolution | How big and sharp the picture is. 720p is smaller. 1080p is sharper. 4K is much larger. |
| FPS | Frames per second. 30 fps is great for talking. 60 fps is smoother for sports and fast action. |
| Bitrate | How much data your stream uses each second. More bitrate needs more upload speed. |
| Codec | The way video is packed. H.264 is still a common live-streaming choice. |
| Keyframe | A full picture that helps keep the stream organized. A 2-second keyframe time is common. |
| Encoder | The tool that makes your live stream. |
| RTMP / RTMPS | A common way encoders send live video. RTMPS adds encryption. |
| SRT | A strong live transport built for rough internet. It can recover lost data and handle jitter. |
| WHIP / WebRTC | A low-delay way browsers and modern systems send live video and audio. |
| NDI | A way to move video around a local computer network. |
| HDMI | A common cable used by cameras, TVs, switchers, and capture cards. |
| SDI | A locking professional video cable used in broadcasting and events. |
| Bonding | Using more than one internet connection together for better reliability. |

60 fps uses more internet and more encoder power.
